Our Goal

The More PETs Coalition is working to ensure that Ontarians and their doctors make use of the same high-quality diagnostic imaging as other Canadians.

PET (positron emission tomography) and SPECT (single-photon emission computed tomography) scans are the preferred diagnostic tool for diagnosing and staging a number of serious health conditions, including certain cancers (e.g., prostate cancer), neurological conditions (e.g. epilepsy), and heart disease.

PET and SPECT scans are the most accurate and effective tools available for diagnosing and/or staging these serious, and often life-threatening, diseases. They empower doctors specialized in these conditions to make informed decisions about the most effective treatments for critically ill patients. PET scans can precisely stage and detect occurrences and recurrences at an early stage, giving patients the best chance for recovery or remission.

Cancer Care Ontario maintains a list of indications for which PET scans may easily be ordered - these indications are supported by rigorous evaluation that has demonstrated impact on patient management.

Despite major investments in PET scanners, Ontario has one of the lowest utilizations rates per capita in Canada.

The More PETs Coalition understands that PET scans are the gold standard for diagnosing and staging many diseases and wants to raise awareness among doctors and patients that PET scans are available and simple to order in Ontario.
